It is a popular martial art created in Japan by Sousai Satoru Sayama and brought to the United States by Sayama's most senior instructor, former Shooto Wrestling champion Yorinaga (Yori) Nakamura, through classes at the Inosanto Academy. It is also known as Japanese MMA. Also known as "Shooto," "Shoot Fighting," or "Shooting," Shoot Wrestling is a unique blend of Russian Sambo, Judo, Jujitsu, Catch-as-Catch-Can Wrestling, and Thai Boxing. A true combat sport and martial art, Shoot Wrestling utilizes long-range kicks, punches, knee strikes, dodges, and footwork.
Practitioners can grab, throw, takedown, drag, and continue ground fighting, locking and forcing submission. Shooto Wrestling training will develop skills such as balance, speed, agility, coordination, endurance, and precision.
