Silat

Silat is the general name for a system combining Indonesian and Malaysian martial arts. Attacks are primarily directed at the enemy's joints, and techniques include grappling, throwing, locking, breaking, striking, and blocking.

It is one of the most effective and fiercest martial arts in South Asia. Silat's effectiveness in hand-to-hand combat was recognized during the Indonesian people's resistance to invading soldiers, and the art has continued to develop rapidly to the present day. Influenced by the cultures of Western countries' Asian colonies, it spread to Europe via the Netherlands in the late 20th century, reaching beyond Indonesia and being adopted by many other cultures.

It was recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in December 2019.
